Teaching the fruits of the Spirit is one thing, showing how they work in our daily lives is another subject entirely. It’s easy to go over each fruit and what they mean, but it can be difficult to show how walking In Step with the Holy Spirit brings out the fruit in our lives. Here is a simple silly way to help kids understand how the fruit can affect how we act and the choices we make.
Have a list of fruit, either in your head or written down. At the dinner table, or during a car ride, go around asking what each fruit would sound like, if it could talk. For example, “If a banana could talk what would its voice sound like?” or “What would it say?” Don’t just let them answer, have them do their best impression of the voice. Take a turn to answer for yourself, the wackier the better. After a few rounds and a few laughs, ask them about how each of the fruits of the Spirit would look in our lives. If I had the fruit of patience what would I sound like? How would I treat others? Take it a step further and give examples of when you’ve seen that fruit show up in their words, attitudes, and/or actions. Take some time to teach them that the fruits of the Spirit are just like the voices the funny fruit had, they are a part of us. We can use them everyday in everything we do.
