The Patience Song
Patience is one of those traits that we long to see in our children but takes a lot of practice to achieve. The great thing for parents to remember is that patience can be modeled and taught. One of the problems I found when my oldest daughter was about 15 months was that when I would encourage her to “have patience” or “be patient”, she didn’t understand what I was asking her. She didn’t know what the word “patience” meant. Out of that was born the “Patience Song”.
The Patience Song is what I sing in my house when I need my girls to be patient. The words are “patience is waiting with a smile on our face.” It is sung to a little tune that I made up and anytime I need the girls to be patient, we sing it.
This simple song achieves two goals:
First of all, it teaches them what I expect when I ask them to be patient. I expect them to “wait” and have a “smile on their face.”
It distracts them from their frustration. Generally if a toddler is getting impatient then their emotions begin to build and it is hard for them to focus on anything else. A song can distract them from what they are frustrated about and refocus them on something else.
By singing this song the same way every time it also helps my kids know that I have heard them, and their request is coming, but they need to wait.
I encourage you to put these words to a tune you create and sing it with your kiddos at home!
